“I’m sorry but I have got to say this. I can’t let you leave without saying it”.

This is what the lady at the log shop said to me when I dropped in during half term to buy some logs. I thought oh god, what is she going to say. She said “your number plate is illegal. It is SO covered in mud, no one can see it - it’s illegal”.

Oh phew, I thought, as she started unwrapping her blue roll and set about wiping the mud off my number plate. Of all the things I get embrassed about, having a muddy car is not one of them. But how lovely that this lady has my back.

Yesterday, she said “you look so happy today” I said “oh right do I normally look unhappy?!” (I’ve spent my life with strangers telling me to ‘cheer up love’ because of my frown lines). She said “well yes actually, you looked a bit on the edge 👀 “

I can write about this with some humour because I wasn’t on the edge. I was busy, always have a lot on but I managed this half term quite well and so I realised that it was probably me turning up with a red, wind-blistered face and a muddy coat. But on this day I was wearing a Lily Gray tank top and a white shirt and I'm sure my outfit has something to do with making me look less on the edge.

Todays newsletter is about working motherhood. Because I think about this constantly and it’s Mother’s Day this month. And I know a lot of my subscribers are parents to young children.
